Passion to nature. Artists, traveler. Documentary.

Trailer!

Actual documentary ~

Do we have something we passionate? Some people might say yes. Some others might say maybe. Some poor one might say : No. Do we committed to achieve our ambition? Even the dream is hard to achieve. I often think that my ambition to great designer was a bit hard, maybe because of my skill, or because of the job opportunities of design field. I always afraid i failed to be a designer. Until I met them.

I understand that to be good in design field. we must be determination and passionate. "an artist is like a traveler walking in the desert, he dunno how long he take to the oasis, but he must be confident that one day he will reach this oasis, the passionate and patient give him energy to survive. " So a designer, this lonely path  need a lot of scarifies. This advise from him make me rethink the process of my learning. i might not be success in future. but I do have a great chance if I passionate and tell my story through my design with opened heart! "I have been through the desert, now is your turn, young designer." Yap Kim Boon said.

He is an Malaysia impressionism artist who lives in Ampang. His artwork often inspired by nature: waterfalls, flowers, and natural view. Why does his artwork so famous? Is because every artwork of him had a touch story or a great message to raise awareness towards the issues of natural.

There are aesthetics in everywhere. I didn't realize that until i interviewed him, Chok Yan Hou. He is a Malaysian traveler, photographer and author. He love to travel, and he love to discover unique travelling location in Malaysia. when he speak his favorite location : Kemasik, his eye grow a spark which shown he so passionate about his career. He help me to realize that the key to view beautiful is slow. Slow down our step, listen and feel with our heart, we will noticed the beauty of it. We often missed it because we walk too fast, so do design, we always missed some good idea. we should be like him, the slower the greater.

Silhouette

The movie who inspired my silhouette is skyfall. 007 series.I wanted to say this episode of 007 is the most emotional James Bond i ever seen. basically i adapted the some element from it, and create my own story line. i have used some element like old Church, beautiful lake view.

Front cover of my silhouette.

Ways to read my silhouette story : left to right ------------------------------------------->
One night, it was a night with full-moon. There is a castle built alone on the large grass field. For years and years, the owner of the castle live happily until something blocked them away from their happy life , DEATH. The husband and wife was dead by an deadly accident and their graveyard was build beside this beautiful castle. Let's observe the castle carefully , there is still a mournful, lonely silhouette on one of the tall windows.  He was a little boy who lost his parents. Dead had separate them and he survived one continued to suffer the pain. The little who name Alex look into his family photo and his tears drops. He pray, and pray for returns of his love until the clock point to twelve.
Twelve O'clock.
Some wise man say, if a sincere soul make a wish on midnight, his wish will came true.......

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
A floating sailboat rise from the moon and no one knew where it came from. The sailboat looks fearful and its looks like those ancient pirate sailboat. The boat surprised Alex. but Alex was not scared, he knew, his wish came true.
Alex open his windows and welcome it. The boat fly near to him and reach him a staircase. So, Alex go into this mysterious sailboat. On the deck of the ship, a man open his arms and welcome Alex. There is a light ring on the man's head, the man looks so holy. And finally he speak : ' Hi Alex! I'm god. '
Alex knew the god had listen to his wish and come and help him. He tell Alex this boat named Barca A Vela. It was the boat that help kids that believe in him. After that, God touch Alex forehead and feel the feeling deep inside Alex.
'I know what to do, Alex. Fly the sail!' He shout.
This incredible man sail his ship with a confident voice. The god, he knew what exactly Alex wished. His dead parents. So, he tell Alex gently, even god cannot return lives. But he can bring Alex to the pass to feel his parents love once again. Alex accepted the reality and finally the boat sail all the way into the pass, where Alex's parents was still alive. Alex experience once all the happiness memories, he is satisfy.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------>

Yet, nothing stay forever. We must move on to the future. Alex with the help of god stand up to face the reality. The boat sail to the future again and Alex return to his castle, his home. Barca A Vela dissapear , so do the moon.

tesselation

"Tessellation is the process of creating a two-dimensional plane using the repetition of a geometric shape with no overlaps and no gaps. Generalizations to higher dimensions are also possible." Wikipedia.

Here are my works, please see the explanation below.

Figure&ground. The element I choose is Fish. The black fish was playing the white bubble while the white fish was playing the black bubble.

closure. The element I choose is face & tree. The brunch of the tree forms the faces.

Proximity. The element I used is flame.

similarity. The motive is cold. Which I used snowflake to metaphore cold.

continuity. The element I used is factal

alignment. My element is aeroplane.

Paper Cut-Out Techniques (study of principle of design)

How designer applies the principle determine how successful he is. The importance of Principle of  Design cannot be denied. To make sure we master these principle, basically the handsome lecturer, named Mr. Charles give us this assignment.

                    Paper cut-out.

We see things that attract our attention first. That's why designer is needed. But to be a good designer, we not only just attract people attention, but also need to build up value and story behind the design too . Those "principles" is like the tools of telling a story in a graphic, if a design have no story, it will just be a lifeless rubbish . Haha.

Jom. Let's see how I done it with my understanding!

Symmetrical Balance.  Anubis was a funerary god. His task came to be holding the scales on which the heart was weighed. If the heart was lighter than a feather, the dead would be led by Anubis to Osiris. If heavier, the soul would be destroyed. Another words, Anubis is the god of balance, and the point of this is, to balance anything, we should first balance our heart. Attitude must be positive in doing anything, that's why I choose this to be my symmetrical balance.

                 Asymmetrical Balance.

Hierarchy. Hierarchy is an order, arranged accordingly to create emphasis. I named mine "The Order Of Life". There's a hierarchy in everything, even life. The square represent memory, is a image stored to preserve things. Growing and growing, Do you asking this question before: What is the purpose of our life?

Scale.  From small to big, from inner to outward, that simple.

Movement. I used inorganic element and geometric shape to suggest movement. I used many form of arrow to lead audience attention from below left all the way to top left, get it? My theme of movement is called "explosion".

Dominance. "Square and circle", I created repetition of square while unique circle from below right dominance the picture.

Repetition 1. Once A Scout, Always A Scout. Repetition of scout logo, in memory of my scouting life.

               Repetition 2. B&W scouting logo.

Rhythm.  Line goes from pack to each other until far apart. Cross over the line the others way around, and finally create the sense of  3-dimensional. A curve flowing from down to up . basically rhythm means how a picture direct our eye-sight, see yourself, realize how it direct your attention? :)

PROJECT STEAMPUNK

Hey people, do you have imagination?Have you imagine a village above the sea-level, a plateau with beautiful forest before? The scared forest and the urbanize machine landscape combine perfectly. The skies painted by fantasy purple and the star blinked within thin-layered of fog.

That's right.
Steampunk
the ultimate imagination of humans. The hope for human being to live better, the imaginary UTOPIA of Plato.

Official definition of steam punk is the sub-genre of science-friction, typically features steam-powered machinery,especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century, the industry revolution.
.

However, steam punk are presented in difference culture by modern artists and illustrators.

Steam-punk fashion based on  19-century British vintage style.

In this era of post-modernism, people do always re-design and adapts idea from the past. So, the idea of steam punk can be seen in difference expressions. I remember when I was 9 years old, I watched a cartoon movie <LAPUTA, THE CASTLE IN THE SKY>which I would never forget until today. I don't know what is steam punk that time but this japan anime give me the first impression of steam punk .The author of it, Hayao Miyazaki is my favorite Japanese animator.  <LAPUTA, THE CASTLE IN THE SKY>one of my favourite film .

1.mining city, the scenery of <Castle
in The Sky>
2.Miyazaki concept of floating city

This is what really inspired me through out my life. His way of telling story somehow similar to 18-century romanticism artists, which the graphics give us emotion and feeling, seriously a picture tells a thousand words. That's why I like him and his works so much. Meanwhile, I was thinking maybe I should make a post all about Miyazaki  next time.

Back To Steam Punk, Mr.Charles assign us with this project. We can select line, point, shape and form to draw a steam punk scenery . I choose line, I wanted to use repetition of line to suggest emotion, like what Miyazaki did. Besides, emphasizating is also important  in a piece of artwork. After sometimes, and some failure and correction,  here you go :).

            Original, artline 0.4 &1.0

Effect 1, Evening steam punk town.

         Effect 2, Starry night.

Q1.     Can you spot the Taylor University & The Design School logo inside?

Q2.       There is a secret triangle hidden  inside the drawing, can you find it?
