Paper Cut-Out Techniques (study of principle of design)

How designer applies the principle determine how successful he is. The importance of Principle of  Design cannot be denied. To make sure we master these principle, basically the handsome lecturer, named Mr. Charles give us this assignment.

                    Paper cut-out.

We see things that attract our attention first. That's why designer is needed. But to be a good designer, we not only just attract people attention, but also need to build up value and story behind the design too . Those "principles" is like the tools of telling a story in a graphic, if a design have no story, it will just be a lifeless rubbish . Haha.

Jom. Let's see how I done it with my understanding!

Symmetrical Balance.  Anubis was a funerary god. His task came to be holding the scales on which the heart was weighed. If the heart was lighter than a feather, the dead would be led by Anubis to Osiris. If heavier, the soul would be destroyed. Another words, Anubis is the god of balance, and the point of this is, to balance anything, we should first balance our heart. Attitude must be positive in doing anything, that's why I choose this to be my symmetrical balance.

                 Asymmetrical Balance.

Hierarchy. Hierarchy is an order, arranged accordingly to create emphasis. I named mine "The Order Of Life". There's a hierarchy in everything, even life. The square represent memory, is a image stored to preserve things. Growing and growing, Do you asking this question before: What is the purpose of our life?

Scale.  From small to big, from inner to outward, that simple.

Movement. I used inorganic element and geometric shape to suggest movement. I used many form of arrow to lead audience attention from below left all the way to top left, get it? My theme of movement is called "explosion".

Dominance. "Square and circle", I created repetition of square while unique circle from below right dominance the picture.

Repetition 1. Once A Scout, Always A Scout. Repetition of scout logo, in memory of my scouting life.

               Repetition 2. B&W scouting logo.

Rhythm.  Line goes from pack to each other until far apart. Cross over the line the others way around, and finally create the sense of  3-dimensional. A curve flowing from down to up . basically rhythm means how a picture direct our eye-sight, see yourself, realize how it direct your attention? :)

PROJECT STEAMPUNK

Hey people, do you have imagination?Have you imagine a village above the sea-level, a plateau with beautiful forest before? The scared forest and the urbanize machine landscape combine perfectly. The skies painted by fantasy purple and the star blinked within thin-layered of fog.

That's right.
Steampunk
the ultimate imagination of humans. The hope for human being to live better, the imaginary UTOPIA of Plato.

Official definition of steam punk is the sub-genre of science-friction, typically features steam-powered machinery,especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century, the industry revolution.
.

However, steam punk are presented in difference culture by modern artists and illustrators.

Steam-punk fashion based on  19-century British vintage style.

In this era of post-modernism, people do always re-design and adapts idea from the past. So, the idea of steam punk can be seen in difference expressions. I remember when I was 9 years old, I watched a cartoon movie <LAPUTA, THE CASTLE IN THE SKY>which I would never forget until today. I don't know what is steam punk that time but this japan anime give me the first impression of steam punk .The author of it, Hayao Miyazaki is my favorite Japanese animator.  <LAPUTA, THE CASTLE IN THE SKY>one of my favourite film .

1.mining city, the scenery of <Castle
in The Sky>
2.Miyazaki concept of floating city

This is what really inspired me through out my life. His way of telling story somehow similar to 18-century romanticism artists, which the graphics give us emotion and feeling, seriously a picture tells a thousand words. That's why I like him and his works so much. Meanwhile, I was thinking maybe I should make a post all about Miyazaki  next time.

Back To Steam Punk, Mr.Charles assign us with this project. We can select line, point, shape and form to draw a steam punk scenery . I choose line, I wanted to use repetition of line to suggest emotion, like what Miyazaki did. Besides, emphasizating is also important  in a piece of artwork. After sometimes, and some failure and correction,  here you go :).

Q1.     Can you spot the Taylor University & The Design School logo inside?

Q2.       There is a secret triangle hidden  inside the drawing, can you find it?

Contextual Studies 3- Comedy Research

Honestly I was terrify when Mr.Charles say :

"Okay, next week you

 guys prepare a comedy

individually!"

Crap, I said to myself. I was never make someone laugh on public speaking before. Many questions pop out to me, and the most dynamic is

"What if no people laugh?!"

If that ever happened, I think my face will be like this:

Awkward Awkward Awkward AwkwardAdAwkwwkwarardAwkwardAwkward

Then, my self-awareness aware that if i wanna do really good job on this assignment, I'm going to do some serious research.

He oftenly used his own experience as a point of comedy, when he say from his point of view, it was so true and funny. So, what is learn from Harith: You must able to understand your own joke, only that you can make people understand yours.

Rowan Atkinson, I always couldn't remember his name, and throughout sometimes i confuse Rowen Atkinson with Robert Pattinson, ha ha. Rowan Atkinson was more familiar to me as Mr.Bean! One of the hero of my childhood. He has been grown up with the young generation, but when we had grown up, he is old. It was quite sad for me, because i thought he will always be with us as Mr.Bean. This make me realise nothing can be preserve forever. But yet, our heart, our spirit always remember him, Mr.Bean. His spirit will never disappears inside our heart.

So, I research about him, I found out that his facial expressions is the key of his hilarious. And also the black comedy , the ego thing about his role make Mr.bean so stupid. The Stupidness successfully make everyone entertained.

2-dimensional design - self portrait .

Before...
After...
The story of this post begin with our Mr.charles lecturer. He taught us about some movment of art and history of art. So, this eventually lead to my hand-made self portrait. I used some 'used material' to complete this unique task, well the outcome was satisfy to me.
And then of cause in my portrait, i combine some art concept, like renaissances portraits and politic portraits. As you can see, the spaghetti sticks symbolise light that seem like so errogant. Its inspired by those dictactor like Alexander the great, Mao Zedong and Napolean.
Napoleon Bonaparte Mao Zedong
I used some concept of Pop art in which the color look very clear.
Materail I used: 1. Spaghetti sticks
                        2. brown rice
                        3. small rice
                        4. dry leaves
                        5. old magazine
                        6. cereals

Contextual studies 2 -self-portraits

After some research and thinking, finally it come to the true  self-portraits. With the inspiration of Andy Warhol Pop Art, I realise that each colour of his artwork represent particular meaning. From a series of same photograph but difference colours, it seem to have difference emotion. Neither sad nor happy, I unable to write down, it mean to be feel, FEEL it !

My Self portraits
My Self-portraits is about discovery. I have a lot of curiosity, it seem like born in me, due to this, I curious to myself too. This portraits is like a reflection of my real life, even myself sometimes i don't know who am I. But why so serious? No big deal, let's just flow with feeling, You are what you think!

My self-portraits discover about relationship. Its between the emotion and colours, and between both colours. Various colour of face represent difference emotion. There are anger, happiness, sad, miserable, determination and joyful. Colours of lips symbolise that the type of speech going to say. And the same goes to background.  Guess! besides than the relationship between colour and emotion, the whole portraits looks bright in colour , same with Andy Warhol portraits, which symbolise my colourful and interesting life.

" Every song has a memory; every song has the ability to make or break your heart, shut down the heart, and open the eyes. But I'm afraid if you look a thing long enough; it loses all of its meaning."    Andy Warhol.

Done.
